Description

South Boundary (164) features 22 miles of hiking trails near Taos, NM.

Directions

All routes start by traveling on highway 64 going east out of Taos. To make the shuttle shorter some people start the ride in Valle Escondido, ride up to Osha Pass, and then take the Elliot Barker Trail south to the South Boundary Trail. That route does knock out a lot of shuttle miles, but it also adds some steep climbing (600 vertical feet in one mile) ñ you decide what is more important to you. Other hard-cores (or fools like us) may consider starting off at Palo Felachado Pass, heading south on the Elliot Barker Trail (see separate review) and then picking up the South Boundary Trail. I recommend going all the way around to the Angel Fire side (highway 434 to Forest Road 76) and starting at the trailhead on Forest Road 76. The trail ends on highway 64 near Taos, at the trailhead and parking area at the mouth of the canyon. If you donít have multiple vehicles to do your own shuttle you can buy a ride from Native Sons Adventures (www.nativesonsadventures.com). It isnít cheap, and they have a minimum, so be prepared to fork out some dollars. Of course, if you have the legs, you can ride the whole thing, but us mere mortals will probably prefer a shuttle.
